Art

At Staplehurst School, our art curriculum is designed in conjunction with a local artist and experienced art teacher. Our art curriculum is to nurture creativity, self-expression, and critical thinking. We aim to provide a comprehensive and progressive art education that inspires and empowers children to explore their artistic potential.

  1. Experience Working with Different Media: Children will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of materials and techniques, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and digital art. This hands-on approach helps them discover their preferences and develop versatile skills.
  2. Be Their Own Artist: Through a curriculum that builds and progresses, children will learn to express their unique ideas and perspectives. Each lesson is designed to build on previous knowledge, allowing students to grow and refine their artistic abilities over time.
  3. Encourage Open Thinking and Challenge Viewpoints: Art education encourages children to think openly and critically. They will be prompted to question and explore different viewpoints, fostering a mindset that values diversity and innovation.
  4. Develop Understanding and Interpretation of Art: Children will learn to appreciate and interpret various forms of art. By studying different artists and art movements, they will gain a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical contexts of art.
  5. Opportunities to Experiment, Practice, and Create: Our curriculum provides ample opportunities for children to experiment with new ideas, practice their skills, and create original artworks. This process of exploration and creation is essential for developing confidence and competence in art.
  6. Inspiration: We aim to inspire children by exposing them to a wide range of artistic styles and practices. Guest artists, museum visits, and collaborative projects will help spark their imagination and encourage them to pursue their artistic passions.

By integrating these elements into our art curriculum, we strive to create a dynamic and enriching environment where every child can thrive as an artist.

Art is taught in three of the six terms each year, alternating with DT. Each term’s unit has 3 skills lessons culminating in an art day where children are given time to show their learning on a larger piece of work.
