At Staplehurst School, all pupils are taught in daily spelling lessons and we use spelling journals to record our progress and help us ‘have a go’.  To help build our spelling strength, and help us write more common words fluently, we use the statutory common exception word lists from the National Curriculum.  In addition, we focus on groups of words with the same strings of letters, sounds or rules, as children need to be able to read and spell these words accurately to build sentences. We develop our bank of spelling knowledge as the year progresses so that we are ready for the challenge of the next year group or key stage.  This can include short dictation sessions, spelling games and also sending weekly spellings home to be learned and tested.
