Cricket News

On Wednesday, Mr Littleton and I took along two teams to the Tunbridge Wells tournament at the Nevill ground (home of the Kent Cricket team). This is an extremely high profile event, with 20 schools competing. Many of the children taking part actually play for cricket clubs; we had lunch time practises and one after school club. Only two of the Staplehurst children actually play cricket out of school, the rest were novices.

Both teams played incredibly well and after six hours of cricket the results were as follows:

B” team: Played 7 games, won 5 and lost 2.

The team: Izzy F, James S, Kester, Freddie H, John-Henry, Freddy B, Zac

Considering they were competing with a player short, their work rate was amazing. More importantly, their teamwork and attitude was exemplary.

Most memorable moments: In the last match against St. Peter’s Izzy’s pulling off a superb catch and James (who played wicket keeper) diving around like Raheem Stirling!

A” team: Played 7, won 7!!

The team: Liam (Captain), Tom P, Tom B, Louis H, George H, Oscar M, Sophie C, Katie H

After winning the four matches in their group, they qualified through to the knock out quarter final stage where they faced a strong St. Matthews’ team. After winning convincingly, they then faced St James’ (the holders) in the semi-final. This proved to be a nail biting match, but we won by three runs.

And then for the final itself – Bidborough (playing in all whites). Despite being nervous, we again won this by an impressive 14 runs. The organiser of the tournament said that we played some of the best cricket he had ever witnesses from this age group of children.

Most memorable moments: Katie bowling out two of the St. James’ team in the semi-finals and Tom P pulling off a fantastic catch in the last over of the finals to seal our victory.

Yet another trophy to add to our cabinet.

Bring on the Kent Finals in Canterbury!
