Letter from Mrs Henley, School Governor

Dear Parents and Carers,

This term the Governing Body’s headline news is undoubtedly our delight in welcoming Miss Davenport as our new Headteacher to Staplehurst School. Governors appreciate Miss Davenport’s enthusiastic and focused preparation for the post with many advance visits to the school: meeting staff, children and parents and familiarising herself with school systems and issues. The Governing Body looks forward immensely to working with and supporting Miss Davenport as Headteacher, and we value the extensive experience she brings to the school.

Writing on behalf of all the Governors I am also delighted to have the opportunity to thank wholeheartedly Mrs Stevenson who has impressed – and amazed us – over the last year. As Acting Headteacher Mrs Stevenson has also been covering for the roles of Deputy Headteacher and, until September, that of Assistant Head for Inclusion. The responsibility, demands and diversity of these roles is immense. Mrs Stevens unremittingly gave of herself to ensure that school life ran smoothly, improvements were implemented, and that staff continued to respond creatively and sensitively to the needs of your children.

One of Mrs Stevenson’s many skills has been to build up a strong and supportive team of Assistant Heads, who have contributed to the management of the school. The Governing Body recognises their dedication and thanks them for their commitment and loyalty to the school. Mrs Stevenson and this team look forward to continuing work together under Miss Davenport’s leadership.

Finally, I would like to express thanks and appreciation to our Chair of Governors, Mr Chris Roome, who through a turbulent and difficult year for the school has been constantly on hand to support, advise and encourage.

I am at the start of my second term as a Governor, having joined the Governing Body after I retired from teaching, but wanting to remain closely involved with primary education. My own four children came to the school, and two of my grandchildren are currently pupils. The Governing Body has been reviewing the role of ‘Link Governors’. This role gives individual Governors the opportunity to become familiar in greater depth with an aspect of the school, including how priorities set out in the School Improvement Plan are being addressed. The role normally involves meeting with the lead member of staff and visiting classrooms to see pupils actively engaged in learning.

I am Link Governor for Early Years and have enjoyed a developing dialogue with the EY leader, Miss Decker. I especially value my visits to watch EY in action (and there’s plenty of it!) This part of the school has a vital role in not only welcoming children to the school but also their parents and carers. This is the start to your partnership with the school: key to supporting your child through education.

The Governing Body wishes everyone a safe and relaxing half term break. We anticipate even more exciting and stimulating times ahead as we celebrate a fully staffed senior management team!

Best wishes,

Mary HenleyCo-opted Governor
