Year 1/2

This week in Literacy, Starfish and Racoons have continued to  be inspired by The Day the Crayons Quit. The children have written diary entries as if they were the crayons, learning about writing in the first person. They also wrote letters from Duncan to the crayons to try and persuade them to come back to him and continue colouring. Our art has also been based on this book and we have been investigating hot and cold colours.

In Maths we have been learning about 2D shapes, focussing on pentagons, hexagons and octagons. The children really enjoyed putting shapes together to make new shapes and naming them.

In topic work, we have been learning the names of the seas around the UK.

Practising for our play has started in earnest now and the children are learning the songs.

Year 1 Topic News

In numeracy this week, we have been halving numbers using practical equipment and investigating odd and even numbers.  Miss Backhouse taught us a funny little Number Crunching song to help us remember odd and even numbers.  In Religious Education, Gecko Class have built amazing model Sukkot – the shelters built in gardens by Jewish people to celebrate the Harvest.  In Science we have been finding out about our bodies and the five senses.  Bumblebee Class had great fun exploring loud and quiet sounds and playing the listening ‘Honeypot’ game.

In Literacy, we have been enjoying ‘The Jolly Postman’ by  Allan and Janet Ahlberg.  We have thought about all the different things we send and receive in the post and have been learning to write addresses correctly using a capital letter for titles, names and places.  On Thursday we made our own envelopes using a net and addressed them using our very own home address!!  We finished off our envelopes with a colourful stamp design.

We have had another fun and enjoyable week! We are very proud of our work and learning!
